Pulled Apart By Horses @ Òran Mór, 23 Nov
Bronto Skylift kick-start a crammed bill at the Òran Mór tonight like the reliable sonic jackhammers we know and love, doling out thick cuts of rambunctious, guitar-driven mayhem. Putting aside that their early slot sees them perform mainly for the punctual, we're off to a banging start.
Up next are Young Legionnaire, featuring Bloc Party's Gordon Moakes and Yourcodenameis:Milo's Paul Mullen. The trio's sound appears to borrow more from Mullen than Moakes and is delivered with gusto here, showcasing a mutual love for melodic experimentation alongside some good ol' fashioned dirge.
Dedicating a song to the mother of one uncomfortable member of the front row – and changing the lyrics accordingly to make things even more hilariously unsettling – Brooklyn's Gay For Johnny Depp charge through a set of unhinged, hardcore-flecked stormers, with a welcome mix of humour and aggression; paving the way for tonight's headliners.
Pulled Apart By Horses have managed to amass a pretty healthy following in the wake of their well-received debut earlier this year. Tonight, they set about rewarding the loyalty of their Glasgow contingent accordingly and, despite a lacklustre front of house sound, they deliver for the most part. A rigorous, sweat-drenched run through their infant back catalogue sees underground hits like Back To The Fuck Yeah and new single Yeah Buddy peppered with gutsy scream-alongs and obligatory, over-excited crowd-surfing. As the band attempt to drain every last shred of energy from their limbs it all ends up a bit of mess, but that's the point, right? [Ryan Drever]
