Boris – Attention Please

Album Review by David Bowes | 25 May 2011
Album title: Attention Please
Artist: Boris
Label: Sargent House
Release date: 30 May

With the seductive electronic sway of the album’s title track being the first sounds to reach your ears, an avant-disco opener is just the sort of thing to be expected from serial innovators Boris, Attention Please following the same train of thought as Mabuta No Ura in trying to capture a select range of their sounds rather than the entire spectrum. In many ways, this could be thought of as Boris’ dance album.

That isn’t to say it’s predictable. Indeed, the gear change into the vibrant drive of Hope is jarring but ever delectable. Meanwhile, the sparse ambience of See You Next Week gels so fittingly with Wata’s softly monotone vocals that it’s a wonder they didn’t promote her to lead singer before now. In pairing subtle hints of their drone and rock background with electronica and even faint touches of funk, this is a work that slots neatly into their history of genre cross-contamination.
