Gavin Webster: All Young People Are C**ts

Article by Bernard O'Leary | 06 Aug 2011

The Fringe presents a problem for working comedians. It's not enough just to be funny, you have to have a show with a theme.

Two years ago, Gavin Webster got a critical mauling for daring to just do material without having a story arc, and now he has returned with a 'proper' show. The problem is that he's a naturally and spontaneously funny guy, and the show slightly straightjackets him. There are a few lulls amongst the laughs as he tries to stay on topic and he's at his best when he breaks away - with moments such as a surreal Frankie Boyle impression and a Beach Boys medley earning big belly laughs (one throwaway line about nightclubs had me in tears).

That's not to say the show itself doesn't work. It's actually far more charming than the title suggests and the affable, motormouth Webster has his tongue firmly in his cheek all the way through, ending with a catchy and upbeat song based on the show's title.

If he could change the "Young people" in this title to "Critics", he could perhaps focus on just making people laugh.
