Isy Suttie: Pearl & Dave
It’s not often necessary to manage expectations during the Fringe, but there are a few exceptions, and this is one of them. Let's be clear that this is not Dobby from Peep Show doing IT or Dungeons and Dragons based stand up. Pearl & Dave is a delightful, story-driven musical comedy. It's a show about love. It won’t make you vomit but it probably won’t make you fall off your seat and ROFL either.
Pearl, Dave, a variety of Welsh taxi drivers and the rest of the cast are played by Suttie alone, her only accompaniments being a small guitar, an expressive face and a trilling, malleable voice. It's a sweet show that's poignant and funny. The predominantly male crowd 'awwww's a lot, and some extended moments of silence are filled with the sounds of the audience gently crying. There are some wholesomely funny moments, and ultimately you will grin all the way through and leave feeling something like joy.
Though her strong acting ability allows her to disappear into her characters, it'll probably be Isy Suttie who is your sweetest memory of your 2011 Fringe.
