Sanity Valve: Get Old or Die Tryin’,

Article by Kate Russell | 10 Aug 2011

Rap duo Sanity Valve is made up of Gishnchips - whose vest, sunnies and cap combo is inspired by gangster rap style - and Mos’ Prob - looking more than a little bit Kanye West with his thick-rimmed specs and red velvet suit - both of whom are surprisingly good at rapping. Opening with a song about how much they love the weekly shop, their topics range from breakfast to how much they hate Bono to Harry Potter.

They are eloquent, intelligent, and funny, though at times there are some problems with annunciation and it can be hard to understand what is being said. Some songs are a little too long, and it can stray into repetitive territory, though not for long. More audience banter or on-stage chat would help, but the range of different styles they employ keeps things interesting; the highlight of the show is a brilliant homage to 90s American ‘educational rap’.

Whatever negatives there are, they are not to do with the meat of the show – they are the kind of wrinkles that only experience can iron out. For people under a certain age, the subject matter and overall style is completely relevant and relatable, but it isn’t for everyone, evidenced by a few walkouts later on by people over that certain age.

The show is great fun, well worth keeping an eye out for.
