New Blood: Findo Gask
They are committed to dislocating themselves from the orthodoxies of the three piece, absorbing new instruments voraciously into their elaborate live set up, each one adding another sweetening dimension.
The artist may be the creator of beautiful things, but in the aesthetic eye of Oscar Wilde Findo Gask would be a wet dream. Such a delectable threesome it seems, so young and so beautiful it makes me so, so jealous.
Curiously named after an old Jacobean town in Perthshire, and determined to escape Fife's depressing myopia, it was adieu to the Fence Record Sunday socials, opting instead to drown themselves in the elixirs of Glasgow's erroneous bohemia. Home became life ensconced in their flat above Sleazy's, committed to dislocating themselves from the orthodoxies of the three piece, absorbing new instruments voraciously into their elaborate live set up, each one adding another sweetening dimension.
Their debut single Fly For, the fifth release on the Too Many Fireworks series Dialogue, is a sophisticated nugget which could quite comfortably hijack the soundtrack of any Studio Ghibli production. Sweeping atmospherics oscillate euphorically, coupling with delicate yearning vocals which hint that whilst it may be a time for contemplation, like the hero in your favourite Manga cartoon, you know you'll pull through. God that sounds a bit cheesy. Imagine that stage when you're rhythmic, but way before thinking of climax. That middle ground where the serotonin relaxes you, before you get greedy and everything turns lupine. For girls it's probably top jockey, it's sensual, nauseous and way deep, with layer upon layer of electronics throbbing and evaporating simultaneously. It's chasing the feeling, not catching it. Perhaps an anarchic blend of the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine would be the best comparison musically, but with a vocal line that's so brazenly pop orientated its phonetic perfection makes Bjork sound like Dot Cotton. It's blatantly all about peaks and troughs.
Every new track is another step closer to the perfect gig where the arrangement, lighting and ambience will combine, to establish oneness, a unique blend of textural and sensory elation. Thus significance is placed on the creation of mood and emotion through their music rather than wasting time on anything literal or trying to create tomorrow's social agenda. So whereas it is virtually impossible to understand from whence the lyrics of their music originate from, apparently singer Gerrard's sexual frustrations, the sweet falsettos of the melody claw at you like a hungry lover.
With a four track EP in the process of being recorded expect Findo Gask to be bothering you muchly in 2006.
