No one can ever accuse Cooly G of laziness. The Brixton-born producer manages to divide her time between working as a behaviour consultant for young people, playing football at a semi-professional level and mixing at some of the best clubs throughout the country. As if that wasn’t enough to occupy her time, the Tooting and Mitcham Ladies F.C. striker also has the gruelling task of looking after her two year old son. Many people would find this hectic schedule unbearable but this young woman simply takes it in her stride. “Basically, I am just really hard working,” states the 27 year old. “I’m just doing me, looking after my little boy and enjoying the music I am playing.”

The musical journey of Cooly G started at a very young age as a result of growing up around people who were passionate about performing. Needless to say, she inherited this enthusiasm for entertaining and used her relentless work ethic to take things to the next level. “When I was younger my dad and uncle had a sound system and I was always wanting to DJ so I started mixing at parties, weddings and bbqs when I was about seven. I had my own Technics, bought my own records with pocket money and I would wash people’s cars to make more money so I could upgrade my own thing. I started producing at 17 years old. I went into the studio and taught myself. Within a few months I got offered a job teaching music production, sound engineering and DJ workshops.”

Cooly G has recently signed to Hyperdub after label owner Kode 9 heard her immaculate fusion of house and dubstep on her MySpace page. This is pretty remarkable considering the page had only been online for a month. Her first 12” is released on the label this month but the young producer is keen not to rush releasing material. “Kode 9 and I are gonna sort out a second single and a track for the Hyperdub compilation CD,” asserts Cooly G. “After that's done we're going to talk about doing an album.”

At the moment Cooly G is touring relentlessly throughout the UK and all of her June appearances are already sold out. This is hardly surprising considering numerous music message boards are currently being bombarded with people praising her groove fuelled house beats and sparse minimalist touches. Her live performances are usually a gathering of club fanatics that have been captivated by her new take on house music and love-stricken young men who are in awe of her undeniable beauty.

As if Cooly G is not already busy enough with her various other ventures, the driven DJ even manages to run her own bi-monthly club night called The Producers House at Babalou in Brixton. This is something that Cooly G is extremely passionate about. “All of the DJs that play are producers like me and we go hard! We had my birthday party at one of the events and it was so heavy. 600 people came and I tore the place down to bits.” It begs the question: Is there anything this beautiful and talented young woman cannot do?
