With their 2008 debut, Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip, or Daniel Stephens and David Peter Meads to their mothers, seemed to hit it in their stride. Single Thou Shalt Not Kill was a mouthy list of cultural ‘dont’s’ that should probably be required listening. Alas, they couldn’t ride on that wave forever, and new album The Logic of Chance arrives with its heavier, beat-led direction. Despite the shiny danceable strand, it lacks punch. Fairground techno bleeps and sped-up keyboards detract from Scroobius Pip’s pop-lit. And on songs like Sick Tonight, Get Better, and Great Britain the title becomes a repetitive lyric, where part of the appeal of their first album was that the songs were more open letters, and each line held its own sentiment. There are moments of genius, like the pent-up, frustrated lyrical bombardment that batters out towards the end of Stake A Claim, but The Logic of Chance lacks the duo's original off-the-cuff appeal.
