Steg G namechecks Easy E, Jacko, Daniella Westbrook and Jesus on Temptation (stating the obvious all too cearly), mellow horns and a nice sample failing to lift the simplistic beats and lyrics above the bland. Anti-Social Behaviour features a Track Star-style beat and some repetitious lyrics about the Glasgow club scene and drugs. It is a pointless tune, the beat derivative and the lyrics littered with American cliches. Schemes is the best on offer here, a fantastic, gritty tale about Scotland's class divide, and the way we push the poor to the edges of our cities. Steg G has the lyrical wit to address this theme intelligently, so does he really need to be the Scottish 50 Cent? The skill and wit he displays atop a growling funk riff on Schemes suggest both Steg G and Freestyle Master could offer us something much darker and more rewarding if they chose to. [Bram Gieben]
