Idiots Of Ants: "We'll never split, we're too much in love"

Fringe favourites Idiots Of Ants talk about YouTube and the tender, passionate man-love that unites them

Hello, Idiots Of Ants. I understand that you're not doing the Fringe this year. I think I speak for everyone when I say: Boooo.

Sad to say that we will not be bringing a new sketch show to Edinburgh this year. It's a shame as we love the festival. We find that the best shows, the best audiences and the best time that we have all year is in Edinburgh in August.

However, we are trying to organise a week to pop up and do a best of show… so watch this space!

You do a lot of stuff on YouTube. How much of a focus is that for the group?

YouTube has been great for us. It is awesome to have the ability to upload a video at any point and find an audience. We have uploaded a couple of new videos to YouTube in the last couple of months and we have big plans for next year, so, keep an eye on the Idiots of Ants channel.

Do you feel there's a shift going on, where getting a TV show is less important than being YouTube stars?

The way in which people watch content is shifting… who knows how media will work in ten years time. We assume that nobody will need a TV or a computer. Our jokes will simply be beamed into the brains of our audience by laser satellites. Evil explosive laser satellites.

Is the Youtube work kept separate from the live shows? Do you get audience members requesting sketches they've seen on the web?

Oddly the sketch that was our biggest hit on You Tube, ‘Facebook In Real Life’, does not work well on stage at all. We have tried it, but some how we cannot make it funny. Odd. You've been a group for a long time, relative to other sketch groups.

Are you starting to think about solo projects now?

We will never split. We are too much in love. We just look good together. Andy’s high cheekbones compliment Jim’s eyes. Elliott has a nice little button nose which looks cute next to Bens big, weird, pointy, spiky chin.

What's next for Idiots of Ants?

In terms of other projects we are starting work on writing a play. It is to be a comedy version of ‘The Count Of Monte Cristo’. It’s early days, but we are proper exited.

Finally: the name. Do you find yourselves having to explain it a lot? Do you feel superior to sketch groups with less cerebral puns for a name (i.e. WitTank)?

Until you asked the question I had not noticed the play on words in the name ‘WitTank’. I guess I just don’t have a mucky mind. If anybody reading this did get the ‘WitTank’ pun… NAUGHTY READER!!!! Wash your brain in soapy water. filthy filthy, filthy!

Idiots Of Ants are appearing as part of Punchline!, a new comedy night at Usher Hall, Edinburgh. Also on the bill are Mark Olver, Andrew Lawrence and Seann Walsh. Punchline! is on Thursday, 15 March, 8pm. Tickets £20/£18. http://www.punchline-comedy.com
