Cariad Lloyd: The Freewheelin' Cariad Lloyd
With the vocal ability to do 43 accents, Cariad Lloyd is out to prove she’s a real actress. She’s hampered by the meddling of the Fringe classification unit, however, who have surprisingly strict regulations on the percentage quota of poignancy allowed for any comedy show. Unfazed, the lovely lady takes us on a rollicking tour of her latest creations, stopping off for a monologue along the way and hopping outside the fourth wall once in a while to keep us abreast of the situation.
It’s not quite a masterpiece, but there’s no doubting she’s an extraordinary talent. The cast list is a mixed bag, with triumphs including Moomin’ Mama, who has transformed herself into a crime-solvin’, pan-wielding detective, and Jooey Bechamel, the indie boy’s idea of a thinking man’s crumpet. This parody in particular shows Lloyd’s dexterous ability to not just riff off film and TV references, but offer up some really scathing satire while she’s at it.
Silly, charming and very much the work of a real live actress, this is a show it would just be stupid not to see. Don’t deny yourself the delight of her marvellous multifarious company.
