Benny Boot: Def-Con 4

Review by Roxane Hudon | 15 Aug 2012

Tall and gangly, Benny Boot wraps himself around the mic stand like an awkward teenager, nervously laughs after many of his silly and weird one-liners and leaves some audience members wondering when the punchline is going to be delivered. This being said, while he obviously doesn’t please everyone tonight (I overhear a few ladies complaining how horrible the show is on their way out), he is recommended by several big-name comedians like Tim Minchin and Jimmy Carr.

The Aussie comedian opens by informing us of the structure of his show; he will bombard us with jokes, with no transition in between, then give way to some light banter about our favourite animals and conclude with more one-liners. Like most comedians who do one-liners, not all of Boot’s material works, but he quickly reacts when it doesn’t, finding an absurd angle to everything.

For every joke that falls flat, Boot makes up for it with a handful of odd, hilarious gags. Two days later, I am still thinking about his Scooby Doo joke and laughing out loud  isn’t that a sign of great comedy? Eccentric and all over the place, Boot seems to be the kind of comedian you either love or hate and I think it's kind of obvious where I stand....(I love him).
