Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare @ C

Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare is exactly what it says it is. An hour performance of the renowned comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream where one member of the cast is well and truly sh*t-faced

Review by Emma Ainley-Walker | 17 Aug 2012

Everybody has that night where they drank a little too much. Say, a bottle and a half of wine, a gin and tonic and some whisky. What if that night you were expected to produce your most classically trained acting skills and perform in front of a packed-out theatre?

Obviously, much of the plot is cut out and the bare minimum that remains is walked all over by a drunk performer, unable or unwilling to remember lines. It’s not a show to see if you’re looking for a simple modernisation of the bard, but if you’re looking for laugh-out-loud experimental comedy theatre this is the show for you. It’s an incredibly intriguing, highly irresponsible (drunk actresses get very worried that their agents might be watching, it turns out) and wholly successful endeavor by Tax Deductable. From the get-go, it will have you laughing and remembering your own nights of folly; and it’s not just the drunk who shines. The ‘drunk wrangler’ master of proceedings keeps things humourous, light-hearted and safe (no smoking on stage) while the rest of the cast’s attempts to put the action back on track often leave them scrambling and laughing along with the audience.

A great late-night pick for the Fringe, you’ll leave saying ‘I’d love to see it when ----- gets drunk. They must be hilarious’, and before you know it, you’ll be planning 2, 3 or maybe even 5 trips. If you’ve seen one, it’s only fair to see them all.
