Eric Lampaert: Two Tickets to the Gum Show

Review by Heather McDaid | 06 Aug 2013

Eric Lampaert bumbles his way through an hour of self-targeting comedy with an assured self-confidence you can't fail to envy. Through his time in the public eye in adverts alongside Bruce Willis (B-Dubz, as he's fondly referred to here) or as the unintentional face of concrete in Mexico, Lampaert has gained a lot of attention for his looks.

Though many parts of his routine aren't new ideas – grammatically picking apart genuine internet hate – Lampaert wins people over with his logic on sexuality, urging men to paint their nails to feel manlier. Moving onto strange territory such as his skull shape and Neanderthal heritage and nerdy rap styling, he seems even quirkier than imagined, but comfortably owns every oddity about himself, physical or otherwise.

Excitably jumping between topics, finding himself easily distracted into new trains of thought, his techie pulls him back to script on occasion. His excitement rubs off, haphazardly high-fiving audience members and engaging with everyone in the room, even the latecomers or the ghost of technical interference, Steven. An extended imagination sequence proves a little hit or miss in an otherwise fun show, with a real character in the centre. [Heather McDaid]
