Brothers and Sisters...It's The Reverend Obadiah Steppenwolfe III
As a first-time congregant in the insane church of Reverend Obadiah Steppenwolfe III, I am quite quickly converted to the foul-mouthed, swaggering swine’s brand of raunchy and lecherous ramblings. The unholy of holiest returns to the Fringe with a “star-studded” chat show where he receives different Fringe artists and attempts to bring ‘em down to his level of crass and crude.
Unless you’re incredibly uptight and/or an actual Christian, I don’t see how you can not have a great time here. The guest at this evening’s performance are cabaret performer Ali McGregor and Irish comedian Ed Byrne. The very pregnant McGregor barely gets a word in, becoming the source of every pregnant sexual innuendo you can imagine. She does get a few minutes to sing an interesting version of The Prodigy’s Firestarter. Meanwhile, Byrne gets the pleasure of a semblance of an interview, fueled by Buckfast, or “Scotland’s champagne,” as the Rev refers to it.
Simply discarding the bearded faux-reverend as offensive and rude would be disregarding the often-perfect timing and cleverness of his jokes. This chat show formula also shows how quick on his feet he is with the improv – he doesn’t falter for the whole hour, even after three glasses of Buckie. A riotous good time, I’d give it five stars if it wasn’t for the inevitable variable of the different guests.
