Hurt and Anderson: Scenes of a Vignette-ish Nature @ The Three Sisters

This is one of the most frustrating experiences at the Fringe. It's not fair to judge a free show on the venue, but sweet Jesus this is horrific. The noise of a thousand drunken idiots outside completely drown out the comedy. To be heard at all, Hurt & Anderson have to tightly clutch their heavy, wired mics, which seriously impacts their theatricality. Their attempts to move around on the tiny stage almost costs Hurt her life at one point.

Maybe these factors cause the girls to draw into themselves, or maybe the show is just a bit self-indulgent, but the net result is that the pair seem to be performing to themselves. Certainly some jokes are clearly for their own amusement and often leave the audience confused and a bit bored.

It might seem harsh to give one star to a free show, because you can always just walk out if it's that terrible. But you can't walk out of this one because, every now and then, they hit on something so funny and so original that you're immediately hooked back in. There are clearly two unique and interesting comic voices struggling to be heard somewhere in all of this. And that's the most frustrating thing of all.
