The Pajama Men: The Pajama Men's Improv Show

Review by Bernard O'Leary | 06 Aug 2012

Here's how good the Pajama Men are: at one point, the show is interrupted by a powercut. Everything goes dark, the mics are dead, total silence. A beat, then Mark shouts, "OK, so our next scene is a radio show". And it is, an improvised chatshow about Ted Nugent giving advice on verruca treatment which continues nutil the lights come back.

The Pajama Men - who don't wear pj's when they're doing improv - are well established as a two-headed comedy monster, capable of invention beyond the grasp of mere mortals. Tonight is just a chance for them to dick around which they do with great aplomb, starting off with an "Impronado" (a portmanteau of "improv" and "hurricane"), writing love letters to each other and acting out an Arthur Miller-style dramatic scene in which Shenoah plays ten characters at the same time. Their timing and instincts are world-class; their physicality is bordering on supernatural, so good are they at creating whole worlds with simple mimes.

The only niggle is that the show has a guest in the middle who does five minutes of standup. No disrepect to the guests, who are all high quality, but it actually manages to throw off the rhythm of the show more than the powercut did.
