Lewis Schaffer: No YOU Shut Up
Some people are just born comedians, and Lewis Schaffer is one of them. He is supremely confident, shaking hands with every member of the audience at the door, and this translates well on-stage. His chatty, informal style is perfect for this Saturday night audience, as is his choice of topics; sex, comedy, baldness, Jewishness, the concept of Britain, and how shit England is.
Everything he talks about he handles deftly. He has the true comedian's touch, moulding these ideas into well-crafted jokes rather than relying on the shock factor. Unfortunately, right from the start there is a man talking loudly to his friend at the back, and this seems to put Schaffer off track. He can’t see the guy so he struggles to put an end to it, until eventually that old chestnut ‘tell us a joke’ is dusted off. It's not condusive to a great performance.
A bit of a shaky show, but it’s early in the run and these things can be forgiven. It’s clear that Schaffer has something special, right deep in his bones. An unfortunately average night from an anything-but-ordinary comedian – well worth a watch.
