Andy and the Prostitutes – The Musical

Review by Barrie Morgan | 09 Aug 2012

A few days ago punk-bluegrass-banjo brigade Andy & The Prostitues got a bad review. So bad that it was pretty apparent the reviewer was either on drugs or should have been. This led to the five-piece reading the review out at the start of their performance and almost destroying what would have otherwise been a great set. This annoys me. We need to nurture new talent, not misunderstand and quash it. They're called Andy & The Prostitutes for fuck sake!!!

Anyway...

Fronted by 'vocalist' Andy McKay, Andy & The Prostitutes are a comedy bluegrass band and they fall somewhere between comedians and musicians. Their songs are well constructed, catchy and often hilarious. They tackle a few riskier topics like chavs and paedophilia but there is nothing here you can't get ten times worse somewhere else.

There is however a sense of unity amongst the crowd. The audience interaction keeps the flow going perfectly but is slightly let down by the overall narrative. Nevertheless, the 'we don't give a fuck' attitude exudes from the guys and is a joy to witness as it captures the essence of the Laughing Horse Alternative Fringe expertly.

In short – like a better dressed Kunt & The Gang with banjos.
