Annie Sertich @ Pleasance Courtyard

An honest hour of heartbreak and coming out the other side alive.

Review by Polly Glynn | 07 Aug 2017

Spoiler alert – Annie Sertich is alive and well (cue I'm Alive by ELO). It's an overall optimistic hour despite its subject – depression, grief and the relentlessness of life. Throughout the first half, Sertich shows she's more than adept at character comedy. Playing a life coach (that looks like Julia Louis-Dreyfus in a Tina Turner wig), then a pal with an unruly child and even her 'evil voice'. Her work with the famous Groundlings certainly pays off.

In the second half there are fewer character pieces and more real Sertich. This times itself with her recovery and acceptance of the tragedies she's had to face and perhaps that she now feels more comfortable in herself. It's very much an autobiographical piece, littered with photos and memories that are relatable. You easily empathise with Sertich and her want to curl up in a ball, and really root for her as she gets back on track after each new setback. It's a warm and enjoyable hour with a satisfying narrative – you know it is all going to be okay in the end.
