Elliot Steel @ Gilded Balloon, The Counting House

With new show Netflix 'n' Steel, South London’s Elliot Steel brings his generation's views to the Fringe

Elliot Steel’s show title is almost a pun if you have the right accent, but as he explains, he didn’t look at it from a different perspective to see if this would work until it was too late.

Steel’s own perspective is wry and critical, picking apart the skewed logic of nightclub bouncers and drunks, as well as adverts and an over-reactionary generation seemingly glued to our screens. Stories of his personal experiences of racism give us an interesting look at a white person trying to do what’s right and not always receiving the grand rewards he thinks he deserves.

However, in picking out faults in who he repeatedly refers to as 'those people', there's no space to stop and consider their point of view for even a second. The show lacks breadth and makes it seem like these points haven’t been thoroughly thought through.

With sharp material and a good structure, Netflix 'n' Steel is an entertaining hour and speaks directly to those of us who might consider ‘Netflix and chill’ as a valid format for a date. This is a well-delivered and grounded look out onto the world.
