Glenn Moore @ Just the Tonic, The Caves

Glenn Moore proves himself a prolific joke writer in his first solo show.

Review by James McColl | 16 Aug 2016

Presenting an hour packed with jokes, Glenn Moore is a wordsmith and lover of language who clearly enjoys wordplay and one-liners. His well-honed material is loosely strung together by a coming-of-age story. Moore has left his small town home and moved to London, and on his way he falls in love, moves in with strangers and lands a job at a radio station. Things don’t go quite to plan however, and Moore soon finds himself questioning his decisions.

After a quick headcount to determine if anyone is from his home village (or if anyone has even heard of it), Moore all but gives up on any audience interaction, something that might help keep everyone engaged with his chosen style. He’s slightly off-beat, slightly charming and slightly too good at coming up with one-liners, and you’d be forgiven for feeling fatigued during the course of Glengarry Glen Glenn. The jokes are so regular and relentless that his material risks becoming comedic white noise, while his storytelling becomes less engaging which alienates those in the audience who want more than just gag after gag. In any case, Moore is a definite talent whose joke writing abilities are sure to find him a fanbase.
