Phil Kay @ Heroes, Monkey Barrel

A characteristically free wheelin' show from Phil Kay

Review by James McColl | 15 Aug 2017

If you are not seduced by Phil Kay’s charm, then spending an hour with the rambling free spirit would be a fairly tedious undertaking. Like the excitable husky Kay describes in Euphoric, the comedian jumps at any movement in the room and spins out a cocktail of improvised witticisms and unfiltered ideas that wouldn’t fit in anything but his loose hour of comedy.

Like a moth to a flame he is drawn to laughter in the room, which can overly stretch routines if he feels he is still getting laughs – more often than not he is right. Kay does what comes naturally to him and for the overwhelming majority in the room, it is funny and rewarding. The aforementioned dog is one of many characters that Kay has met on his recent travels around the world. Staying in Airbnbs, swapping shoes with the homeless and racking up air miles has given Kay a lot to talk about – if he can fit it all in an hour long show.
