Pick Me Up
I’ve been thinking about this show rather a lot. In fact, since I first pocketed an austere flyer emblazoned with ‘PICK ME UP’ in unmistakable warning colours; a motif I later realise is lifted from the show. It stars a terrifically young cast, of Lowell Belfield, Jason Forbes, George Fouracres, and Ryan O’Sullivan. They’re a clever bunch – though what else would you expect from a gang of ex-Footlights?
It’s a sketch show, and unlike so many before it, this is everything a sketch show should be – surprising, consistent and with the surgical comic timing of more experienced cult names. It’s a testament to the marriage of hard work and raw talent it’s taken to put together, and all the more impressive coming from a fledgeling cast and director. The characters are likable; believable with a precise dash of absurdity, woven into an intricate plot that snakes unpredictably. Every element of good comic writing is on show here, and the crowd lap it up.
In addition to brilliant writing, the cast have a genuine cohesiveness that gives the show its edge. There’s a real understanding of one another that complements each ludicrous character or scenario, with particular mention to George Fouracres, who’s armed with a sort of manic vaudeville spirit that sets the skits alight. The show is kinetic and playful, with a velocity that powers through the hour in no time.
One or two sketches feel just a touch unresolved, and a meandering narrative sometimes leaves you playing catch up, though the rest is so blindingly hilarious it’s instantly forgivable. Pick Me Up is a standout show – and I have a sneaking suspicion it won’t be the last we hear of this group. See it while you can. [Vonny Moyes]
