Prom Kween @ Underbelly, Cowgate

Prom Kween is a show for the freaks, geeks and musical theatre fanatics

Review by Nadia Younes | 07 Aug 2017

Rebecca Humphries’ drag-musical Prom Kween was inspired by the story of 18-year-old Matthew Crisson, who, in June 2016, became the first gender fluid teenager to be crowned Prom Queen at LaGuardia High School.

Like a millennial musical adaptation of Freaks & Geeks, it celebrates the outcasts in an American high school and follows one non-binary kid’s journey to winning the coveted role, narrated by none other than drag icon RuPaul (or at least a very good impersonator).

The show depicts an array of exaggerated American stereotypes, from the blonde-haired, blue-eyed mean girl Lexie to the lovably simple jock Troy, to Troy’s beer-drinking, gun-loving, sports-watching American nationalist father – whose musical ode to his beloved ‘Murica is one of the stand out moments of the show. There are more than a few pop culture references filtered throughout that may be lost on the non-millennial, non-social media savvy audience members, but all can still be appreciated for its delivery. And whenever Prom Kween slightly lacks in structure, it makes up for it in fun.
