Cinema icon Bruce LaBruce to attend SQIFF 2017

The legendary Canadian LGBTQ* filmmaker will attend Scottish Queer International Film Festival with new film The Misandrists and his classic black comedy Hustler White

The third annual Scottish Queer International Film Festival (SQIFF) opens this year with a bit of a coup, as queer icon Bruce LaBruce comes to Glasgow with his new film The Misandrists.

LaBruce’s new feature is a fantasy tale that follows a group of radical lesbian separatists living a cult-like existence in the heart of 'Gerwomany'. The film sounds like the Canadian filmmaker’s typical riotous mix of satire, sex and sexual politics. According to SQIFF, the group – who call themselves the Female Liberation Army – “take up the struggle of freeing all female people through a mix of revolutionary porn-making, songs about taking down the patriarchy, and even a sneaky dancing nun.” LaBruce will be in town with the film’s star Caprice Crawford for a Q&A following the film.

LaBruce will also introduce a rare screening of Hustler White, his 1996 queer riff on Sunset Boulevard, in which LaBruce stars as a geeky, lovelorn academic documenting the LA hustling scene and falls for the hunky Monti Ward (played by American model Tony Ward).

"We are very excited to have The Misandrists as our opening film this year,” says SQIFF. “We are big fans of Bruce LaBruce, so are extra pleased that he will be attending the festival to present his film. The Misandrists follows in SQIFF's tradition of screening radical and challenging queer filmmaking, and we look forward to hearing back from our audience their response to the film.”

Taking place over five days (27 Sep-1 Oct), SQIFF’s annual celebration of queer film takes place in venues across Glasgow. All festival venues are fully wheelchair accessible, all films feature English language subtitles and all events are BSL interpreted where possible. The full programme will be announced on 17 Aug.
