Sounds from the Other City 2017 reveals first acts
The annual celebration of new music, art and performance brings together many of Greater Manchester's best DIY and independent promoters to programme multiple stages along Chapel Street and the surrounding area.
Salford music and arts festival Sounds from the Other City has today announced the first wave of acts to head the line-up for 2017, with Flamingods, The Lovely Eggs, and The Orielles among those set for the festival on 30 April.
Artists revealed this afternoon include Patty Hearst, Vanishing Twin and Plastic Mermaids playing on stages programmed by the likes of Now Wave, Bad Uncle, Grey Lantern and many more. Comedy promoters Sham Bodie also return with a bill including delightful surrealist duo Sam & Tom, bizarro entertainer Birthday Bread Man and fellow comedy champions The Delightful Sausage.
Some new collaborators have been added to curatiorial duties this year, with music promoters Family Tree, spoken word and slam poetry specialists Young Identity, Manchester club legends Aficionado and Hebden Bridge’s arts/music festival Inkfolk all joining the bill – plus Heavenly Records and Manchester Midi School.
Those who experienced last year's performance by Liverpool minimal/modern classical outfit Ex-Easter Island Head with members of the BBC Philharmonic in Salford Cathedral will be thrilled to hear they're back for 2017, this time collaborating with formidable folk musician Laura Cannell. The site-specific composition they will create together has been made possible by a commission from SFTOC and Samarbeta; also among the new commissions this year is 'a work of fragmented and demented musical theatre' by author and provocateur Austin Collings at The White Hotel.
Meanwhile, this year's art direction consists of a full-site takeover called 'Sounds of The New Dawn' – expect dark rumblings, occult happenings and your third eye to open. In their words: "Join the congretation; may all beings awaken..."
Scroll down for the line-up so far – and keep checking back, as more names will be added over the coming weeks. But remember: the real star of the show is the fabled SFTOC atmosphere (and you can remind yourself of that with our galleries from last year's #SFTOCSkinny photo competition!) The Skinny will be teaming up with SFTOC once more this year for a new project; news on that coming soon.
In the meantime, grab yourself a ticket or three: £23 from Skiddle.
