In Bruges director Martin McDonagh’s new black comedy sees the brilliant Frances McDormand start a one woman war in her town

Warning! This trailer is NSFW. But then it’s for a film by Irish writer-director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths), the king of the sweary movie; no-one writes foul-mouthed dialogue quite like him.

The full title of McDonagh’s new black comedy is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and follows the great Frances McDormand (Fargo, Moonrise Kingdom) as a mother seeking justice following her daughter's unsolved murder. Dissatisfied by the work done by the local police – who count Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell among their number – McDormand’s character rents space on the three billboards of the title to leave messages showing her disapproval at the authorities’ lack of progress. Messages such as, "Still no arrests?", and "How Come, Chief Willoughby?" Other townsfolk – including John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, Abbie Cornish and Caleb Landry Jones – get involved in the debate and all hell eventually breaks loose in the town.

Things seem to heat up further when the local news channels get wind of the dispute. “It seems to me,” McDormand's character tells a TV reporter, “the police department is too busy torturing black folks to solve actual crimes.”
