Watch Deadpool 'for your consideration' Oscars video
Could Deadpool be this year's Oscars dark horse?
As unlikely as this sounds, Deadpool, the foul-mouthed, ultra-violent, piss-taking comic book movie starring Ryan Reynolds, could be an Oscar contender.
The film has already picked up Golden Globe nominations – it lost best musical/comedy to La La Land, and Reynolds was beaten for best actor in a musical/comedy by his namesake, Gosling. But that’s not the only award nomination it’s recieved. Over the last few weeks, Deadpool has racked up nominations from both the Writers Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America, the latter being one of the best indicators if a film has a chance in the race for the Best Picture Oscar.
Almost all of Deadpool’s punky allure emanates from its star. The film's brilliant marketing campaign on the lead up to its release last February was centred on Reynolds' charm, and from its idiotic emoji billboards to its ridiculous 'Blatant Bachelor Baiting' tv spot, the actor's irreverent wit helped the film go on to gross $783 million at the box office. Reynolds has put a similarly cheeky spin on the film's Oscar campaign. For example, Academy members all received DVD screeners for the film back in November with the following letter from the star.
“Despite countless roadblocks, the incredible team of Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Tim Miller and I continued onward until somebody at Fox accidentally said ‘Yes’ thinking we were a Maze Runner spin off,” reads Reynolds’s letter to Oscar voters. “I can offer you complimentary backstage passes to my heart, along with my sincerest thanks for supporting our Deadpool film this year.”
While on Twitter yesterday, Reynolds tweeted a hilarious "for your consideration" video, which takes the form of a montage of scenes from the film with onscreen text listing some bizarre factoids about the production: “four pairs of assless chaps”, “12 humiliating minutes on a casting couch”, “42 rejection letters from Fox”, and, most apt of all for the meta comic book movie, “3 good walls and a 4th that’s broken.”
