Dave Callan: A Little Less Conversation @ Assembly Roxy

A Little Less Conversation may seem reminiscent of school dance shows, but it does come with with slightly more risqué moves, Beyoncé, surprisingly impressive dance moves, and more chest hair on show.

Irish-born Callan breaks the ice with a sketch that demonstrates the difficulties of dancing with a broken arm, before moving onto his first of many well-choreographed and staged dance routines of the night. He then walks us through the dance moves, trends and techniques from ancient times, through to the 1800s, 1900s and into the present day in a witty and engaging manner – and of course, with examples. We're not only entertained by Callan’s clever humour and moves, but also learn a lot about dance.

Supported by the fantastic Australian duo, Kirrily and Jamie-Rose, the two dancers provide an elegant, professional contrast to the caveman-like movements of Callan, which heightens the comic value of the routines. The finale of the night is worth waiting for – and those seeking a bearded Viking lookalike in a leotard, covered in glitter, shall not be disappointed. And even if you don’t seek it, you will be thrilled. With a refreshing take on audience participation, Callan fully engages with the audience, reminiscent of the ‘funny guy’ in a group of friends, rather than a comedian.

With some side-splitting blunders and an inability to hold a straight face at times, the three provided an hour of entertainment and a trip down musical memory lane, from Wham! to Frozen.
