David Holmes, Headspin, Bongo Club, Edinburgh, Oct 7

David Holmes makes an appearance at Headspin this month for a set that is sure to involve a little bit of everything. From a start playing techno in the pubs of his hometown of Belfast, he moved on to running two club nights at the Belfast Art College, the now infamously known Sugar Sweet (which is said to have inspired Orbital's track Belfast on their debut, 'Orbital') and Shake Yer Brain. In 1992 at the tender age of 23 he had his first release, DeNiro, with Ashley Beedle. He followed this up with 'This Film's Crap Let's Slash the Seats' in 1995, and one of the tracks was subsequently picked up and used on the film 'Pi's soundtrack. The film aspect has followed him through his career, resulting in him composing the score for 'Out of Sight and two tracks for 'Ocean's Eleven'. Dark, chaotic, and electronic are just a few words that have been used to pin down Holmes' style, but they have never concise enough to truly capture it. Acid house, techno and leftfield beats are his main stable but having recently formed The Free Association, (his hip-hop/soul group) expect more of the latter for the Headspin crowds.
