The Grand Budapest Hotel, Birdman, The Theory of Everything lead BAFTA nominations
The nominations for the 2015 British Academy Film Awards have been announced, with Wes Anderson’s comic caper The Grand Budapest Hotel picking up eleven nominations.
The film – which opened last year’s Glasgow Film Festival with its UK premiere – picked up eleven nominations including a nod for best direction for Anderson, a best film nomination, and a best actor nomination for Ralph Fiennes’ lead role as the proprietor of the titular hotel.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman and Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything pick up ten nominations, including best film, best actor and best director nods for each. Coming-of-age tale Boyhood and Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game complete the best film line-up.
Jonathan Glazer’s haunting Glasgow-set alien horror Under The Skin – our film team's top pick from 2014 – is up for best British film, as is Yann Demange’s ‘71. Jack O’Connell, star of ‘71 and BAFTA Scotland best film winner Starred Up, is nominated in the Rising Star category voted for by the public.
Elsewhere, Damian Chazelle picks up a best director nomination for Whiplash – one of five nominations in total for the film – and both Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo pick up supporting actor nominations for their roles in wrestling drama Foxcatcher.
Following their BAFTA win for The Making of Longbird in 2013, writer-directors Ainslie Henderson and Will Anderson, along with producer Cam Fraser, are in the running for best British short animation for Monkey Love Experiments, a stop motion film centred on a misguided lab monkey who dreams of flying to the moon.
The 2015 BAFTA film awards take place on Sun 8 Feb. For those of you who prefer to create rather than just watch your films, submissions for BAFTA Scotland’s New Talent Awards are open until 19 January.
