Bert Jansch @ Glasgow Concert Hall

A man totally at one with his instrument.

Lauded by the likes of Johnny Marr and Devandra Banhart, Bert Jansch is the unrivalled grandaddy of folk guitar virtuosity. Jansch presently has a rolling cast of nu-folk luminaries that he associates with, and tonight's support act is Philadelphia's Espers. They carry out this task admirably, weaving pleasant webs of psyche-folk whimsy using finger-picked guitar that Four Tet would give his right arm to put volleys of percussive farts beneath. Sadly Jansch, performing alone with just an acoustic guitar, is dwarfed by the antiseptic auditorium, which kills the intimacy of his music. He's obviously a man totally at one with his instrument, and there are moments when the audience is completely rapt, but this is music for pub snugs and green fields. What's amazing is hearing flashes of contemporary artists in his work; everyone from Adem to Gastr del Sol, and thus, despite the dubious choice of venue, the influence of this master and his art is irrefutable.
