Billy Childish @ Bongo Club

A timely injection of prime fervour.

Lover her or hate her, it's hard to disagree with Tracey Emin's assertion that her ex-boyfriend Billy Childish was 'stuck, stuck, stuck'. But while the Brit-Art rent-a-gob's description was meant as a dig at Childish's affection for the past, the rest of us have good reason to be thankful for his affection towards the old ways. Childish's musical template has remained steadfastly in the garage over the course of his long career – his recorded output testament to his overriding passion for ramalama three chord mayhem of the type minted in the sixties by the Who and US proto-punkers like the Count Five and the Standells. There was little deviation from this formula at the Bongo Club as Childish and his Musicians of the British Empire delivered a timely injection of prime fervour. Resplendent in the garb of a Victorian guardsman, Childish hammered out a set of raw, relentless power, the only drawback being the ludicrously early curfew. Stuck? Yes. Bothered? Not a chance.
