Bryson Tiller gives his best hype man performance, while SZA shines in her support slot

Live Review by Nadia Younes | 23 Nov 2017

If there’s one lesson to be learned from tonight’s Bryson Tiller show, it’s this: don’t book a talented vocalist as a support act if you’re going to follow it up by singing over backing tracks.

Just barely audible above the incredibly loud and overexcited crowd is the joyous sound of SZA. Listen carefully and you can just about hear her on-point vocals and awkward rambling between songs. She provides some useful advice to the very young audience members, who could benefit from paying attention, such as, “Always remember to bring your own weed to a party.”

Introducing Doves in the Wind, from her outstanding debut album Ctrl, SZA announces: “Who wants to talk about pussy?” If you’ve heard the track, you’ll know she’s referring to the incredible amount of times the word is said, and the performance of it is near-flawless.

For someone known predominantly for slow jams, Bryson Tiller’s set is surprisingly trap-heavy, and you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve accidentally stumbled into a Migos gig. However, the reason for this appears to be that he just can’t be bothered singing live, and instead puts on his best hype man performance.

It’s a shame because Tiller actually has some decent songs. Run Me Dry, for example, is a very good dancehall track, the performance of which could be massively improved if he was actually singing it live. Exchange and Don’t receive the biggest responses of the night, but Tiller again barely sings a word of either of them live, leaving the audience to do his job for him most of the time.

Sadly, the only redeemable part of this show is SZA’s performance; Tiller’s, however, is unfortunately very much missable and simply just rather lazy.
