Liars @ Broadcast, Glasgow, 1 Nov

Liars play loud, heavy and with apocalyptic energy tonight in Broadcast's packed basement, delivering a brilliantly eclectic live show

Live Review by Claire Francis | 03 Nov 2017

Liars have been inexplicably relocated from The Art School to Broadcast for tonight's show. A last-minute venue downsizing would usually imply a lack of interest in the band in question. That's assuredly not the case for Liars, who have a packed basement sweating, heaving, and eating out of the palm of their hand from start to finish of their brilliantly eclectic live show.

Happy Meals lay the foundations with an excellent performance that draws a strong early-hours crowd. The duo are one of the best live electronic acts in Glasgow right now, thanks in no small part to Suzanne Rodden's magnetic stage presence. She also proves equally effective off-stage, as she clambers through the crowd and up on to a bench, still singing, towards the end of their energising set.

With frontman Angus Andrew decked out in bridal wear, Liars seize the stage. Touring as a three-piece, they rip through a chaotic, hedonistic performance that draws on the heady post-punk of their earlier material while incorporating the electronic experimentations of their latest album, TFCF, into the mix. The second of tonight's songs, Coins in My Caged Fist, is the first slice of the new record, but the group also clatter through a broad selection of their back catalogue, which yields an engrossingly varied performance.

Andrew exudes cult-leader charisma, while the eruptive percussive talents of Liars' drummer Blaze Bateh propel the audience into a bouncing frenzy. Liars play loud, heavy and with apocalyptic energy – the kind that leaves you rushing upstairs for a gasp of fresh air before scuttling back downstairs to catch an emphatic encore. For those present, the unexpected venue change is a blessing; a chance to see a live band of this calibre in thrillingly intimate surrounds.
