Omni @ The Hug & Pint, Glasgow, 21 Sep
Atlanta three-piece Omni are taut, energetic and damn good fun at the Hug & Pint
"It's a fucking rollercoaster of emotion up here – the perfect amount of anxiety to play a show, but slightly too much anxiety for social interaction." Breakfast Muff might be feeling apprehensive, but their support set for Omni tonight shows the three-piece's stage show developing in leaps and bounds, with an encouraging crowd egging along their collection of snappy two-minute-mark songs.
With their new record Multi-task set for release the day after this Hug & Pint show, the Omni three-piece face tonight's sold-out audience in a jubilant mood. This celebratory atmosphere never falters and from start to finish there's barely a note out of place – singer Philip Frobos, drummer Billy Mitchell and ex-Deerhunter affiliate Frankie Broyles demonstrate some of the tightest playing we've seen all year.
The (long drawn out) post-punk label is continually slapped over the Atlanta trio, which to the Omni uninitiated implies a lesser amount of fun than the group deliver on stage tonight. Television are an obvious influence, and the trio's delivery could be likened to Parquet Courts (but with a lot more affability thrown in the mix). Their set balances the best of their intricate rock progressions from debut album Deluxe, with watertight cuts – such as Equestrian and set closer Southbound Station – from the new album. Taut, energetic and damn good fun, Omni are at the forefront of what post-punk is really all about.
