Soulfly @ Studio 24, Edinburgh, 19 May

After an intensely hot 45 minute wait, the crowd are already sweating as the intro to Blood Fire War Hate – from Soulfly's 2008 album, Conquer – begins to pound out of the PA. This excitement trebles when the familiar fat dreadlocks of Max Cavalera creep into view as he leads his band through the rest of the track with sluggish destruction.

For the most part, Cavalera looks like he's been woken up about five minutes ago and shoved onstage in a daze, but remarkably, still hammers out every guttural scream and chant with aggression and power. This is duly reciprocated by his legion, who, under Max's command, wrestle their way through circle pits and a wall of death, barking back every word they can to 'classics' such as Back To The Primitive, Eye For An Eye and even Sepultura anthems like Refuse/Resist. Frequent tech troubles and lethargy aside, it's a welcome dose of brutality for a Wednesday night in Auld Reekie. [Ryan Drever]
