The Go! Team @ QMU, Glasgow, 9 Feb

The fun never stops for The Go! Team tonight at a packed out QMU in Glasgow

Live Review by Chris McCall | 16 Feb 2018

While the near-capacity QMU crowd may look older, the band on stage tonight appears to get younger with every tour. The Go! Team's music has always had a timeless quality about it; could it be rubbing off on its members? Ninja, the band's effervescent cheerleader, remains as energetic as ever – shout-outs and handclaps there are plenty. Alongside songwriter and group mastermind Ian Parton, she's been one of the few ever-presents in The Go! Team live band since their 2004 breakthrough album Thunder, Lightning, Strike.

With a new eight-strong line-up, and cracking new album Semicircle to perform, there is plenty of energy on stage from Brighton's favourite purveyors of maximalist pop. And judging by the dance moves on show, there's a lot of excitement in the audience as well. There are few bands who can match this kind of feel-good mood. Bad vibes do not belong in the G!T world.

Recent single Mayday is an early set highlight, showcasing Parton's unique ability to marry thunderous hooks, sweet vocals and chant-like choruses. The band leader and other Go! Team members swap instruments at will – one minute there's two drummers pounding out an infectious rhythm, the next minute there's a three guitar-strong attack. In this case, more is always more.

While older cuts – like the peerless Huddle Formation – get the biggest crowd reaction, newer material is more than capable of standing on its own. Semicircle Song is a particular joy, with Ninja taking to the crowd to ask them to share their star signs mid-song. At just short of 80 minutes, this set almost seems too short. The crowd are still dancing when Ninja gives a final farewell. But with The Go! Team, the fun never really stops – it just moves on to another venue. They'll be back soon, no doubt looking younger than ever.
