The Horrors @ QMU, Glasgow, 19 Oct

By the time they close out their set, its clear that The Horrors are back, more confident than ever

Live Review by Claire Francis | 23 Oct 2017

When there's so much information about the band you’re into available online – like their setlists, for example – it can be a blessing or a curse. The Horrors are currently touring off the back of their latest release V, and the internet tells us they’ve been sticking to a tried-and-tested selection of songs whilst on the road.

They know what they’re doing. The group’s 2014 album Luminous was a bump in the road – guitarist Josh Hayward admitted as much in a recent interview with The Skinny – but V has been widely hailed as a return to form; the heights of which they last reached with their sophomore record Primary Colours. Strategically, the bulk of the material they play tonight is taken from these two albums.

Once your eyes adjust to the gloom of the QMU stage, you can just make out where the dry ice stops and The Horrors begin. The Southend-on-Sea quintet have never been ones to shy away from their influences, and they open with the synth-driven, Gary Numan-indebted Hologram. They move into the throbbing Machine, with towering frontman Farris Badwan holding the mic stand aloft, before taking a sharp turn from their new album back to the gothic lovelorn gloom of Primary Colours’ Who Can Say. We’re three songs in, the crowd are bouncing about in delight. By the time they close out the short, sharp set with the aptly titled Something To Remember Me By, it's clear The Horrors are back, more confident than ever.
