The Spinto Band @ Oran Mor, 29 Sep
When the six zany members of The Spinto Band hop, skip and jump on stage to play their equally mental brand of kazoo-fusion indie-pop, pulling funny faces and indulging in goofy dancing, the effect is that of a Fisher Price Pavement auditioning for Yo Gabba Gabba. Their enthusiasm is infectious for a song or two, but soon reveals itself as the lock-jaw gurning of a band trying to mask going through the motions with the aid of a quirky sheen. Luckily for the Delaware outfit, they’ve a repertoire stuffed to the gills with top tunes, allowing them to comfortably coast through tonight’s show yet leave Oran Mor shouting for more. Jewel in the crown, Oh Mandy, is still an invigorating invitation to bedroom dance without shame, while the handclaps and good vibrations of Summer Grof proves that their new album aint no slouch on pop's sofa either. Perhaps with a little less contrived wackiness they'll soar rather than coast the next time we see them. [Chris Buckle]
