Jay Rolex & MC Almond Milk are “the best big-man-little-man partnership in Scotland,” according to the Save As Collective Bandcamp page. The Glasgow-based duo released debut album Smell the Audi – “a likeable helping of quirky Glaswegian rap" – last November. The album was released via Save As as a digital download as well as on cassette tape; written and recorded by Jay Kural and James E. Scott and mastered by Jonnie Common.
The latest single to be taken from the album, Studz Up, sees the duo collaborate with Ciaran Lyons from Forest of Black, who has also produced music videos for the likes of Pictish Trail, Catholic Action and Ibibio Sound Machine.
Describing the video, James E. Scott, aka MC Almond Milk, tells The Skinny: "I wanted to remake Jan Švankmajer's Virile Games for the football streaming generation, replacing the beer and whisky of the TV viewer with an energy drink and vape, replacing the balletic harmony of the animated footballers with goofy, GIF-like copy and paste versions of Jay and I. Ciaran has captured us perfectly – Jay, the quick, skilful full-kit wanker vs me, the shaven headed thug who throws his considerable weight around…
"Historically, an authentic representation of football has been tricky to represent in film," continues Scott. "Realistic depictions that capture the grace, intuition and improvisation of players, while maintaining a competitive, physical edge are rare. We decided to err on the side of the physical when making the video for Studz Up, given the song's lyrical content – a stream of football clichés usually attributed to the darker arts of the beautiful game."
Jay Rolex & MC Almond Milk's album Smell The Audi is out now on Save As Collective. MC Almond Milk plays the BBC 6 Music Fringe at The Glad Cafe on Wednesday 22 March.
