Glasgow’s The Imagineers are back and gearing up for the release of their debut album, Utopian Dreams, set to hit the shelves on 2 May via Hit The Light Records. The album is full of twists and turns; taking in elements of west coast surf and baroque pop with singer songwriter-style moments, giving the album a film score feel.
The Imagineers have endeavoured to create an intriguing sound akin to Californian surf trio The Growlers, combined with a storytelling quality like that of Ben Folds. But lead singer Steven Young’s undeniable Scottish twang, as well as the band’s natural cinematic flair, mean The Imagineers have created their own unique sound.
After original band members parted ways in 2013, Young travelled Europe with his guitar in tow, finding new inspiration by playing with various musicians around rural Spain, France and Italy, helping shape Utopian Dreams. And with the help of Scott Forsyth (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Lee Ballard (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Marc MacCallum (bass, backing vocals) The Imagineers have been reborn.
The Skinny are delighted to be premiering the music video for Californians Drive All Day (In the Sunshine), taken from the new album. "The song’s about a Glaswegian sunbed fanatic falling in and out of the dream world during a tanning session,” Young tells us. “Musically it’s quite psych/pop, and crams a lot of the best elements of the album into two-and-a-bit minutes."
