The Little Kicks – Bang the Drum Slowly (Video Premiere)
Watch the new music video for The Little Kicks' Bang the Drum Slowly
Bang the Drum Slowly is the fourth single to be taken from Aberdeen four-piece The Little Kicks' latest studio album Shake off Your Troubles. Bang the Drum Slowly is a super catchy slice of pop that's filled to the brim with lovely background bleeps, chirps and wobbles, so we're delighted to be premiering the accompanying music video which you can watch in the above player.
"This song gave us our album’s title and it was a lot of fun in the studio, and possibly our most favourite to record," frontman Steven Milne tells us. "Adding all the weird synth noise bleeps, random percussion and gang vocals was a lot of fun, plus we got to crank our amps up and spend time really beefing up the drum sound to suit the track. In essence it’s a Motown song but with lots of our own added weirdness on top. When people sing along to the outro live it’s one of the best moments of our set so we knew it had to be a single.
"For the video we felt the song would be best represented by a live performance and we filmed the video one night above our rehearsal room in a disused warehouse space." Milne continues, "We had to wait until really late at night in order to get rid of any natural light so conditions were pretty cold and needless to say hanging about in an empty warehouse with lots of dark nooks and crannies wasn’t for the faint-hearted but the guys at Two Wings Creative who filmed it were great and we’re really pleased with how it came out."
The single comes armed with a B-side in the form of You and Someone Like Me (Night Version). "We’re really into the idea of alternative versions of tracks, or people remixing our songs," Milne adds. "We had this really cool countrified acoustic version of YASLM that was going down really well live and at radio sessions so we initially spent a weekend recording this as an acoustic version for a B-side.
"Our drummer Scott then could hear a potential remix / other arrangement and spent time playing around with the track and new sounds which led to this version. It’s turned the song in a different way and made it moody and atmospheric and almost 80s-esque. To me it sounds like perfect late night driving music and with Blade Runner in the cinema / Stranger Things on the telly we felt it was a perfect B-side and a nice way to bring back a song people had heard before but in a different light."
