Ghostface Killah joins Restless Natives line-up
Legendary Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah has joined the bill for the inaugural Restless Natives multi-arts festival in Glasgow this May.
Ghostface, who celebrates the 20th anniversary of his seminal debut solo LP Ironman this year, will play the new Saint Luke's venue on 13 May as part of the debut festival. The Wu-Tang member joins a music line-up which includes Cardiff agit rock outfit Future of the Left and Sheffield mathcore champions Rolo Tomassi (14 May), Canadian electronic composer Tim Hecker and ambient prodigy Blanck Mass (15 May), Chicago emo revivalist Into It. Over It with Massachussets four-piece The Hotelier (11 May) and Lost Map's lo-fi grunge pop duo Tuff Love (15 May).
In film, The Skinny will present a special screening of Couple in a Hole, starring Kate Dickie and Paul Higgins. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with BEAK> duo Geoff Barrow and Billy Fuller, who composed the original score for the thriller. Elsewhere, Edinburgh label Song, By Toad presents a screening of documentary The Ambiguity Of David Thomas Broughton, and cult classic The Room is followed by a behind-the-scenes documentary and a Q&A with Greg Sestero.
Blood, Sweat and Vinyl: DIY in the 21st Century, featuring contributions from Neurosis, ISIS and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, screens with a live Q&A by director Kenneth Thomas, and Adam Stafford presents an exclusive live score for A Page Of Madness. Details of screenings curated by The Glasgow Film Theatre, Africa In Motion, The Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival and The Radical Film Network will be revealed soon.
Announcing Ghostface's addition to the line-up, Restless Natives' Chris Cusack said: "There's a common argument put forward during discussions about DIY promotion that, small independent acts are one thing but big bookers – the likes affiliated with Live Nation and other multinationals – are a "necessary evil" to bring big acts to a city.
"That may well be true when the system is set up to make it impossible to even get in touch with the agents representing the big acts but, where contact is possible, often the DIY collectives –providing they have a good track record and can demonstrate reliability – offer fairer prices for fans and fairer compensation for the artists themselves. Ghostface Killah was our attempt to demonstrate how a professional approach and real enthusiasm for the musical act can help bring someone to a town they otherwise would skip.”
Restless Natives takes place at venues across the East End of Glasgow from 9-15 May; full details of further showcases, film nights and talks programmed by Hotgem Music, Nightschool Records, No One Knows Records, Winning Sperm Party, Stretched, Fuzzkill Records, Nice n' Sleazy, Bloc+Music, Song, By Toad and Struggletown will be announced very soon.
