Jessy Lanza – Pull My Hair Back
Co-produced by Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys, Canadian Jessy Lanza's debut for Hyperdub continues to rehabilitate 90s R&B as pioneered by the likes of Timbaland and Rodney Jerkins by allying it with hazy, ethereal beats and high-sheen vocals treated and layered to create complex melodic structures.
It's a good fit with recent Hyperdub releases by the likes of Coolly G and Darkstar, whilst at the sparser end of the spectrum in terms of the beats – more aimed at the boudoir than the dancefloor – and the pop end in terms of Lanza's songwriting, but this increases rather than diminishes its appeal. Lanza's voice, while not quite unique, is certainly appealing, and Greenspan's contribution to the understated, intelligent production is as magnetic as ever, with bubbling arpeggiated synth bass and glacial keys.
