Hector Bizerk's enthusiasm when performing and willingness to experiment has won them fans far beyond hip-hop circles. The Birds of Paradise Theatre group, which trains disabled actors, likely had these qualities in mind when they invited the duo to create an original score for Nicola McCartney's play Crazy Jane.

Making the switch from writing personal songs to composing pieces required to work in the context of a script can be daunting – especially if you're a rap act known for contemporary social observation, tasked to empathise with the life of a late 19th century can-can dancer.

The play's predominant themes of mental illness and associated stigmas provide fertile ground for Hector Bizerk, however. Rapper Louie has always had obvious storytelling ability, and he sets the scene well throughout, and has no problems contemporising the issues raised.

Musically, Hector Bizerk are understandably constrained by the demands of the theatre – there's less of their usual energy – but this remains a thoughtful and at times provocative soundtrack from a band unafraid of taking risks.
