Let The Right One In @ Dundee Rep, 5-29 Jun
The original was a dark, weighty slice of Swedish horror and the American adaptation was surprisingly competent. It begs the question: where is there left to go with a stage adaptation of Let The Right One In? The first thing to note is that we are in good hands. The writing and directing team of Jack Thorne and John Tiffany come from recent television and theatre success respectively. Thorne has written for Shane Meadows' TV adaptations of This Is England, whilst Tiffany directed the award-winning Black Watch; noteworthy for its visceral, action-packed capturing of the theatre of war.
Without giving too much away for anyone that hasn't seen the films, the story is of a bullied boy on the cusp of adolescence, who is befriended by a strange and otherworldly young girl. We follow the development of their relationship as things progress from simply odd, to outright murderous and unexplainable. The Dundee Rep has a history of excellence when it comes to staging outlandish, conceptual shows and this National Theatre of Scotland production should continue that tradition. [Ortho Stice]
