Whitworth Art Gallery

Located on part of the University of Manchester's grounds in a historical Grade II listed building, the Whitworth Art Gallery was recently transformed and has doubled in size. The refurbishment has expanded its gallery areas, including two new wings extending into Whitworth Park. Housing a collection of 55,000 items, the art gallery and museum features work in a range of mediums from sculpture, to fine art and contemporary paintings, to textiles and wallpaper. The gallery's collection includes paintings by world renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and L.S Lowry, sculpture by Henry Moore, Sir Jacob Epstein and Barbara Hepworth, and features work by more contemporary artists like Tracey Emin, Mary Kelly, as we as being the location for performance art by Marina Abramovic. The gallery also hosts programmes and workshops for people of all ages, with art classes for adults and family events for young children. [Charlotte Davies]
