You could definitely be forgiven for walking into The Hanging Bat and not having a clue what to order. In short, they don't have Tennent's. What they do have is a blackboard full of craft beers, one of which is even brewed in house in their basement brewery.
Although such choice is intimidating on arrival, do not fear, as knowledgeable staff are on hand to tell you what’s good, what’s blonde, what’s dark, what tastes like liquorice, and so on. Even better, the Bat was the first place in the UK to serve pints in measures smaller than big ol' pints. This is pretty handy if you have no idea what you're in the mood to drink and don't fancy sipping your way through a quickly decarbonating bucket of beer.
That said, there are plenty of bottled beers on offer as well as the craft stuff, and a mighty selection of gins and wine to boot. The Bat also offers a soulful food menu including hot dogs, nachos and a saliva-inducing meatloaf burger.
Trying to scout out the best place to grab a pint in Edinburgh? If so, you're in luck. Every year, we carry out an annual Food and Drink Survey and The Hanging Bat was voted one of the Best Pubs & Bars in Scotland by you, the great Scottish public, for a third time in 2018, having previously dominated the category in 2014 and 2015. It may not be consecutive, but that's a hat-trick in our eyes! Check out the full list of 2018 Food and Drink Survey winners, where the 'Bat is joined by fellow titans Nobles, Inn Deep and Paradise Palms.
